How often should Test and Tag be done in QLD?
The importance of test and tag cannot be overstated when it comes to workplace safety. Having the appliances tested for electrical safety and tagged to show compliance with QLD legislation should be an essential part of WHS to avoid risk to your staff and customers. Testing and tagging also need to be conducted at regular intervals, by a trained and qualified electrician, which are determined by the industry.
What is test and tag?
Test and tag is the name given to the process of checking the safety of portable electrical appliances. There are 2 parts to the process:
- Visual inspection of the appliance for damage
- Electrical test with a portable appliance tester
If the appliance is deemed safe for use, a durable tag is attached which states the date that the next test is due.
If an appliance fails the test, it will have a durable tag attached with the date of the failed test and a warning not to use the appliance.
The appliances are tested in accordance with AS 3760:2022 and the electrical safety regulations outlined therein.
Why do I need to do testing and tagging?
Australian WHS legislation requires that all workplaces can show safety systems and procedures. As part of these systems, routine test and tags must be completed to uphold safety standards in the workplace to protect employees and customers.
Appliances that have been tested and tagged clearly show all using it that the appliance is safe and fit for purpose to prevent accidents and injuries.
When should the test and tag be done?
The interval between tests is dependent on the industry you are working in, the appliance itself and the work that is being done. This is reflected in the timeframe between test and tags, of which the recurrence varies depending on the industry. The recommended frequencies are:
- Construction - 3 months
- Factories and warehouses - 6 months
- Service and manufacturing industry - 12 months
- Office work - 5 years
